One of the first questions parents ask is, what should my child wear to their first karate lesson?
The good news is that your child doesn’t need a karate uniform for their first class.
At Invicta Karate Academy, we want children to feel comfortable, relaxed and ready to enjoy themselves from the moment they arrive.
Comfortable Clothing Is Perfect
For their first lesson, your child should simply wear comfortable sports clothing.
This could include:
- A T-shirt
- Tracksuit bottoms
- Sports shorts
- Leggings
- A bottle of water
Loose-fitting clothing allows children to move freely while learning their first karate techniques.

Do They Need a Karate Suit?
No.
There is no need to buy a karate suit before your child’s first lesson.
If your child enjoys their trial and decides to continue, we’ll explain everything you need to know about purchasing the correct uniform.
That way, there’s no risk of buying the wrong size or style.
Will They Train Barefoot?
Yes.
Karate is traditionally practised barefoot.
Our dojo floors are clean and specifically designed for martial arts training.
Training barefoot also helps children improve their balance, coordination and movement.
What About Jewellery?
For safety, we ask children to remove jewellery before training.
If your child has long hair, tying it back helps keep it out of their face during the lesson.
These simple steps help everyone train safely and comfortably.
Don’t Worry About Getting Everything Perfect
Many parents worry they’ll forget something.
Please don’t.
Our instructors understand that every family is new at some point.
We’ll happily answer any questions when you arrive and help your child settle into their first class.
If you’re wondering whether karate can help a shy or anxious child, you’ll find many parents have exactly the same concerns before their child’s first lesson.
Your Child’s First Lesson Is About Having Fun
The first lesson isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about helping your child feel welcome, make new friends and enjoy learning something new.
Many children arrive feeling nervous but leave asking when they can come back.
Karate is designed to help children build confidence one lesson at a time.
If you’d like to learn more about how karate supports behaviour, focus and discipline, you’ll find it becomes one of the biggest benefits parents notice.
